Wentworth Miller & Robert Knepper Discuss Finale

Posted on Wednesday May 13 2009 by Clarissa

Wentworth Miller

Re: knowing this season was going to be "Prison Break's" last

It's very rare the show goes out on its own terms, you know, when you hear the word cancelled most of the time that means, you know, someone's gonna pull the plug and the lights go out and everyone goes home. But we were able to finish out the season and that gave the writers time to address all the loose ends and really pull things together in a way that I hope is thrilling and satisfying for an audience that's been paying their dues if you will for four years. I think they deserve a really good send off and that's what we're working hard to give ‘em.

Re: what we can expect from the series finale

When I think of the last episode I think there were definitely some surprises and some, some, some really electric unexpected moments. Again the show continues to surprise me in that we are a network show but we do things that you'd expect to see on cable, say, and not everyone gets a happy ending and I think some people might be taken aback by that but I think it's also very true to the story that we've been telling all along. In a sense the story can only end one way and I'm really pleased that the writers and the cast and crew and everyone involved in the show have the cajones to really see it through.

Re: why he's loved the "Prison Break" storyline

"It's not a procedural drama. It's not the same beats season after season. We intentionally throw out everything that we know works and reinvent ourselves every fall and we take risks like nobody else and I think by and large they've all paid off and the, the important side effect is that it keeps things interesting and new and fresh for the actors involved."

Re: the finale reunites Michael and Lincoln with some old friends

"In the finale we see a couple of very familiar faces, people we thought were gone for good but clearly were not, but we're glad to see them. I mean as actors you miss cast members who fall by the wayside for one reason or another and I think that the people we do get to say hello to and catch up with were, were fixtures the first season and second season, people whose presence was felt and was definitely missed after they were gone."

Robert Knepper

Re: How did it feel to film the final episodes?

"Like I'll never forget the day, the last day I knew was going to shoot with Dom & Wentworth; I mean that was a really emotional day for the three of us. They still had another day with the two of them but that was the day that I would never work with them again, with these characters. And we hugged each other and it was very emotional, close experience as well as the words that poured back and forth between us of telling each other how much we respected each other and what an amazing ride it's been for four years, stuff like that, it was just sweet. And then, to say goodbye to this crew, it's been an amazing ride. You could just go through these jobs, I suppose, and say well you know here's the end of this job and off we go to the next one, but this one you can't really do that. You wouldn't be somebody I'd want to work with for instance because you can't be bitter about these things. This was four years of our lives, I mean, I looked at my kid the other day and I went, I've been doing this show more than half of his lifetime, four years, he's almost seven. Every day that I went to work was a joy because you just realized I am so thankful for this great gig, this incredible character, the fact that it's internationally so popular, it was a new adventure everyday. So, the bitter part of it, the sad part of it for me was yeah that it's over, the sweet part about it is that we always appreciated everyday and it was a great lesson I think for all of us to just say this is a great way to live your life...never take it for granted, always appreciate it and keep giving back what's been given to you and that's how we lived ours lives on this show."

Re: Reflects on his character & what he loves about T-Bag

"Even on a simpler level, he just doesn't give up, this guy never was a quitter and that's one of the things I loved about this character. If he hadn't had all these other terrible things happen to him as a kid, if he hadn't committed all these terrible crimes, he'd be a great role model, but unfortunately he's got the baggage and you have to pay for these things in life. He never gives up; he will do and say anything to survive, up until the last moment that you see him in the story. I'm not going to give it away but he doesn't lie down and take it, he figures out a way to survive."

Re: The reunion of old characters in the finale

"I think it was a great homecoming and I think the audience will feel the same way. The other cool thing about it is when you have a family reunion like that you know that there's going to be a big change involved. In this case, the change was this is the end. This is the end of this show, this is wrapping it up in that book end kind of feeling of characters that we all grew to love over the years and here we are bringing them back. It was amazing; it brought back all these memories of being together in Chicago when we all started and we, yeah again, four years...a lot's happened to all of us, it's made our careers, it's made our lives totally different. None of us can walk down the streets anymore without causing a little bit of a fuss and just to see these guys again after that first year when we basically were kids, kids with our characters. And just to see, you know, Amaury I hadn't seen for awhile and Rockmund I hadn't seen and especially Rock, it's like hey man how are you? And we love each other you know with our characters always hate each other and there's all these racial things going back and forth between the two characters but he's the salt of the earth and I love working with him and he's funny that always passes the times really well. And Papi, Amaury, it's like seeing your brother, it doesn't take too long to get back on your feet with somebody like that cause he's just always right there, it's terrific. And I think the audience is going to love the fact that these enemies come back together. These guys who were friends and then with T-Bag with enemies so it should be a fun reunion for everybody."

Re: What he thought of the ending, finale?

"I remember calling up Matt on the phone and saying, I'm just curious, I never call you up, I never discuss what's the next script or anything but I'm kind of curious where you're thinking we're going to go with T-Bag. Is he going to be like Hannibal Lecter and just walk off into the sunset in this nice, late Panamanian suit, hat and stuff. Or, is he going to be killed, is he going to walk off a cliff, is he going to drown, is he...I mean there were so many choices, again I'm not going to give it away because it'd be like, you know, I used to say this years ago it'd be like giving a Christmas present too early. As much as people want to know, they don't want to know they want to experience it by watching it, there's nothing like that. I was very happy, I was very happy with how they ended it, I think it's beautifully done all the characters are wrapped up. I was very happy how they ended it for T-Bag, it was really kind of a book end kind of feel that you, certain things in that scene that re reminiscent of when you first saw T-Bag four years ago. These sort of gestures and body language that are so much part of the character that the fans will always associate with this guy.

I downloaded a pirate version of the dvd movie that was shown in Europe.

I think the way Michael dies is bogus. He pulls the high voltage cables out of the fuse box by hand and then he shorts the 2 cables out creating a voltage surge. He dies while he holds and touches both cables together. This guys an engineer, he could of thought of another way to short out those 2 electrical cables without holding them by hand.

The writers goofed...

The ending was perfect! Once his nose bled you knew it was over for him. The show always pushed the envelope just the right amount. When he had to have the surgery or die you knew he ran the risk of it coming back and killing him. I loved the show! I never missed an episode and I am sorry to see it end but to go out like that was genius! Only the good die young...

Why MICHAEL is killed???
I want to see Prison Break 5 season.

Maris on May 19, 2009, 10:53 am

My husband and I have watched the show from the beginning. What an amazing cast and storyline. We never wanted the 1 hr. to end. We also were disappointed in one way with the finale. Of all the characters we also wanted Michael to have a happy ending. From the very first he was the person who was trying to do the good thing,by saving his brother and being the force behind good vs. evil. He was the character that came up with all the ingenious ideas of not only getting Linc out of prison but of saving the people and friends he loved. We really wanted Michael to have a wonderful life with Sara and his son. Great show!!! Ann and Al

Why the writers hv to killed michaaeeelll? huhuhuuuu. soo saaad. so not happy ending storyyyy. why didnt let all casts live happily ever afteeerr? huhuhuuuu

Tirza on May 19, 2009, 1:04 am

i'm sick about michael dying! that is ridiculous!! i would not have watched it if i would have known that he was going to die. I cried so hard about it..they worked so hard for everyone to live happily ever after and he was the one who actually deserved to be happy he did nothing but help people the whole show! i'm very disappointed!

bailey on May 18, 2009, 1:02 pm

Is it true that he isnt dead..some guy said its all setled up??? please some one tell me...

Armin on May 18, 2009, 8:04 am

Why did they kill Michael??? Why??? He was the main hero, Sarah left everuthing for him and then he died...He did not know his son...That's very mean....Why the writers did that, I need to know why!!!!

C on May 18, 2009, 2:47 am

Michaels health problems doesn't kill him, he sacrifices him self in the 2 hour special that is coming out straight to dvd and its on sky1 next week, 27th a think, he knows he's going to die from his health problem so sacrifices himself when breaking Sahra out of prison after she gets lock up for the shooting of michaels mother! sounds stupid I know! I personally thought it was a crap way to end the show, with him being killed off, they didn't have to do it as the company is no more. the only reason I can think they killed him off is to say to the fans "its over, no more prison break"

evanzie on May 18, 2009, 1:59 am

the season finale was amazing. i am upset that they killed Michael. I've watched Prison Break from day one and i never thought that the writers would kill Michael after every thing he has done to help everybody. I cried at the end, when i say the way Sara hugged him at the end after he nose bled i knew he was the brother that was going to die. They could have killed Mahone of T- bag not Michael. It's kind of like losing a family member. I'm happy they brought back Sucre but i do not understand why they did not bring back LJ.
I hope to see them all in other shows. I will miss Prison Break. I hope writers think about bringing back the show. It will truly be missed

Paige on May 17, 2009, 5:04 pm

i'm pissed off that they killed off michael prison break is one of the best tv shows i look foward everyweek to watch prison break i hope they make a show with all of them.

gene on May 17, 2009, 5:03 pm

I have watched prison break from almost the beginning and now I am sorry that I have.

The show is great, twists and turns, great cast and most of all an escape. For just an hour at a time you get so caught up in the plot and the characters you can have a rest from the real world. It was great fun and soothing.

With all that is going on in the world, the economy, wars, murders on the news all the time I think the writers in an effort to have a final surprise twist to the plot killed off Michael. I think that was a mean spirited way to thank your viewers after 4 years of loyalty and very unnecessary.

Wars, cancer, illness, old age and murder kill people all around us every day. It was a great shock but not very original, I think the writers have a great future writing for the local news shows.

Great ending on a great show!
But i's just wondering about something i missed. Why did the company want to put lincoln i the chair in the first place?
And was the president working for the company?

Andreas on May 17, 2009, 3:02 am

I have really enjoyed the series since the start. I was attracted to it at first because I wanted to know more about life in prison. But it evolved into so much more than that. The characters were excellent, the drama and dilemmas always making you hungry for more. I will really miss it a lot. Thank-you for the creative work of many. I have to say that I would have preferred a happily-ever-after ending for Michael, especially after all he went through as a character. He deserved a break...that was my only disappointment, so I guess in my mind, I'll have to create an alternate ending...C'est la vie!

Marg on May 16, 2009, 8:58 pm

I loved the way it ended-a little sad though. I read something a few days earlier that hinted at Michael's death so I was not totally surprised. They wrapped up all of the loose ends and brought closure. I dont like to be guessing at what really happened, i.e. the Sopranos. I loved this show; watched it from day 1 and never missed an episode. I've read where people are really mad that Michael passed but I dont see how they can be. A great show that I will really miss. And Wentworth Miller is so easy on the eyes.

Fantastic 2 hour season finale. A return to the form of season 1. Went always wanted the show to go out with a bang, and it certainly did so.

With that finale, and the overall package (seasons 1-4), Prison Break will forever be in my memory. A great show with a great ending.

Kevin Lee on May 16, 2009, 11:24 am

After wiping off some tears after watching S04.E22, I just had to write something....

What an absolutely incredible 4 years it has been! Waiting for that 'time' each week for the next Prison Break rollercoaster ride, always kept you craving for more and more!! The mid season & end of season breaks were almost unbearable. I cannot recall ANY other TV Series to cause that effect. The cast and crew of ALL the 4 years of series, can be proud knowing that they worked on the most innovative, captivating and suspensful TV show to date!!

As for the cast, You will ALL be missed. Wentworth, Dominic, Robert, William, & Sarah especially, thankyou for making the show what what it was... Legendary! See you at the Oscars!

Indigo on May 16, 2009, 7:08 am

he is not dead, it was all staged, for him to be truely free from the governments that can use his talent he had to "die". This allowed all the folks he cared deeply for to live free, what a sacrifice....anyway I like my ending due to it is plays on lthe human condition.

k wincz on May 16, 2009, 6:55 am

omg! i just got back from school and didn't see the last finale. I was waiting to watch it online, and now, I am crying because Michael died?????? What kind of crap is that? I can't watch it anymore....I had this picture in my head of what the last episode was going to be like. I can't believe the writers did this. I know the fans weren't expecting this. Well, is being a great 4 years.

One last thing, Wentworth I wish you the best, I hope you can make tons of movies so I can see you act again. You are a terrific actor and I don't want to see your talent go to waste!

Love PRISON BREAK now and forever!!!

NEP on May 15, 2009, 8:20 pm

Ican't believe that Michael is gone. This 2 hour episode is one of the few times that we got to see Michael happy. He was always so concerned with keeping everyone else safe. I am going to miss the characters and Michael's death reduced me to tears. For just a second when Sara called Michael I thought I was wrong and then you see his son. Heartreaking.

Kathy on May 15, 2009, 8:18 pm

I cried, WHY did you have my beloved Michael die in the end? Why? He ahd been through so much! Why couldn't he and Sara and their son live live happily ever after. I thought the writers of PB were great, now with this last episode I'm not sure. This in not what the fams wanted. we did not want Michael to die. I am so sad that PB ebded this way............Wentworth Miller is awesonme. I hope he will be on another series very soon. He will always be Michael though. Why did you end PB with him dying? We were all waiting and longinfg for he and Sara and their son to be together forever!
